Okay, this "review" is kind of a half-joke. But we really had fun tonight! Let me rephrase that....APY was miserable, AJ had fun until she hit exhaustion and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
That being said...."High School Munie On Ice Skates," as AJ calls it, was cheesier than all three movies put together. How is that possible? The sound tracks were so wierd and annoying. Sometimes you heard the original cast singing songs, other times you heard cover voices. Then sometimes the cover voices spoke lines and other times new voices you had never heard spoke lines. A few of the cast members (maybe two?) actually spoke with mics but the rest, especially Sharpay, made ridiculously large hand motions while speaking their lines. That was the annoying part.
The costumes were great and the ice skating choreography was really good. The execution was fine...though most of it seemed like it was not particularly challenging choreography. With the exception of Troy and Gabriella, I can't say I was impressed by anyone's skating, especially Sharpay. (Am I demonizing Sharpay here because she's the mean girl in the show? Maybe...but I don't think she landed a single jump). Troy and Gabriella were great skaters and a pleasure to watch. The both landed plenty of doubles and I think Troy did a triple.
AJ absolutely loved it. She stood up and danced during her favorite songs and at other times sang along. She was totally wiped out by the end. I was surprised APY did not run from the building. Poor guy looked like he wanted to bolt.
The tickets were extremely affordable because the merchandise sales were outlandish. $10 bucks for an HSM snowcone. Hats, shirts, snacks, candy, light-up toys, etc. I believe we were the only people in the building not buying crap for their kid - and also the only people who brought snacks from home. The souvenir and concession stands were ridiculous!!
But there is a bright point here. APY and I are Disney stockholders. So even though our stock is not doing so well right now (and hey, whose is?) we see that the economy is not hurting sales of HSM crap, and our investment seems solid for the long haul.
The cheesiest moment of all? Toss up between Troy's shirt-less scene and the couple's first kiss. Both kind of disturbing....yet oh so lucrative.
