So yesterday I was watching AJ and her friend (we'll call him May-May...) in the yard. I was pulling weeds, May-May was helping and AJ was in the sandbox. I was sitting on the paver border of one of our flower beds. All of a sudden, AJ walks over and says, "Uh oh Mommy." She helpfully points out that my leg is covered by tiny ants.
Apparently I've disturbed their nest. I faintly realize that my leg has been vaguely hurting for the last minute. And suddenly I am aware that the ants are biting me. Based on the descriptions I found online, they are fire ants. Some people die from fire ant bites! For reals.
We all run inside and I wash off my leg and put on hydrocortizone cream. I figure it's a done deal...everything looks pretty calm on my upper hamstring. This morning I wake up with crazy itching to find that every single little bite is a puffy red welt. And there are forty of them. Forty!
So I've got some itch relief spray, but I'm a little worried about sleeping tonight. Husband is recommending Xanex, so that even if I itch like crazy I'll be too knocked out to do anything about it. Maybe I'll see if we have Benedryl?

ahhh! Similar thing happened to me, minus AJ and 'May-May', a couple weeks ago. I was edging around the back patio and all of a sudden I realised my leg had been tickling/irritated for a few minutes...they were EVERYWHERE!
I did the freakout dance, which I sure hope amused the neighbors.
Good luck sleeping, I'd recommend benadryl for sure!
Fire ants are a pain!
I think it's hysterical that Andy recommended Xanax. I hope you feel better. I agree with Leah, Benedryl should help with sleep and swelling.
The good news is it's not like the most recent Indiana Jones where a person would fall to the ground and giant ants would cover their bodies and eat them alive. Fire ants aren't that big. And Harrison Ford isn't around.
You poor kid! See? That's what you get for weeding your yard. I figure it's best not to disturb the natural element and let my yard look like a jungle.
You know, for safety's sake.
LOL @ Quigs! I feel the same way sister!
As for Benadryl if you haven't already purchased some I've got a whole box. I bought it this summer for a cold and only used one tablet. I can bring it tomorrow if you want.
Hope you get some sleep tonight =)
Mommy Schiff - If you think of it, bring some tomorrow! I had a Unisom hangover today but I slept well last night.
Quigs and Lori saw the ant bites today and I think I actually surprised them with how grotesque I am! Yay!
I think if Harrison Ford went to playgroup I would NEVER miss one. Heck, I would have found a sitter for Sick Sam this week even!
I will bring them tomorrow for sure!
