Now I remember - That's why I don't watch TV

I am feeling kind of sick to my stomach right now. I was so hoping to love a new show on CBS called "The Mentalist." It stars Simon Baker, one of my favorite actors, particularly because he is almost as handsome as my husband. (Let me say here that I have the best husband in the world - he has actually gone out to rent all the Simon Baker movies for me to watch because he knows I'm such a big fan. Isn't that amazing?). You may know Simon Baker from "The Devil Wears Prada," in which he played yummy Christian Thompson. I love that movie, it's like candy for a tired Midwestern mommy.

Anyway, we recorded "The Mentalist" tonight and just watched it. It's about a police detective named Patrick Jane who used to be a fake medium (think Crossing Over). Although he was faking the psychic skills, he has very sharp sensory perception, which allows him to help solve crimes in a funny way that annoys his co-workers and his boss, played by an annoying unknown actress.

So the problem is that I didn't know how much blood and violence there is on this show. It's probably nothing to most people (some murders, a few people got shot, a bloody smear on the wall, visit to a morgue) but I just can't stand any of it. So I was a little stressed out, anxious because I kept thinking Simon Baker would get killed and hiding my eyes from the violent stuff. But the end revealed a twist so sad that I don't think I want to watch anymore.

***Spoiler Alert*** So Patrick Jane is helping to solve a string of crimes by a serial killer. Jane had gone on a tv show several years ago proclaiming he was helping to find this serial killer using his psychic abilities, bluffing about his knowledge of the killer. It turns out the serial killer got back at him by killing his wife and daughter. THAT IS TERRIBLE, and so tragic that I don't think I can watch anymore. Fast forward to today and Jane makes funny jokes here and there, flirts with his co-workers and brings donuts to work. I can't see that stuff knowing the background story.

I buy into acting so easily, television execs must love people like me. APY keeps reminding me it's all fake and Simon Baker's family is just fine and, by the way, he's Austrailian so that's not even his real accent. But that tragic event just underscores the whole show and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to watch again next week. There is so much sadness in the world that I would just prefer to watch fluff as an escape. Thank goodness "The Office" premieres on Thursday! Although APY pointed out I will be depressed if Jim and Pam break up. For my emotional well-being let's hope they stick together!
