Did you ever have one of those inexplicable moments when a song pops into your head and you don't know why? But it's there and it sounds so good in your head that you run to your computer and download it (using your husband's iTunes credit) immediately? That happened today. AJ and I were playing with batteries and wrapping paper (I know - odd combo, we were messing around in the storage closet) and Rusted Root's "Send Me On My Way" just up and popped into my head for the first time in years.
When I was in college, Rusted Root was huge. We played them at every party, put them on every mix tape, etc. They were from Pittsburgh but we all knew they were sweeping the nation and everyone in America loved them as much as we did. Honestly, I didn't even know that many songs, but all you really needed to hear was the afore-mentioned "Send Me On My Way" and "Ecstasy."
I am a pretty big nerd and my husband would tell you I am sorely lacking in knowledge of modern music, although I know obscure lyrics to Broadway shows you've never heard of. So I was shocked when I mentioned today's download and Mr. Music of the 90s had never heard of Rusted Root. Never heard of them?!? I called my best friend from college and her husband answered and confirmed my belief that, yes, everyone knows who Rusted Root is. Their popularity did sweep the nation and you couldn't have a party without them.
So most of my readers are from the Midwest. Did any of you make it through college without hearing of this band? I am wondering if I'm as cool as I think I am...or maybe Mr. Music of the 90s is actually right - were they only well-known in the great state of PA?
Well whether you know them or not, your chance to hear Rusted Root live is coming up soon...Canopy Club, Urbana, November 11!

never heard of them.....sorry.
I did go to the youtube link and I liked the song though!
YES! We all knew it in college and we were in the midwest. They came and performed to a sold out crowd. We played them at every dance and party and all the bars played them. I obviously have a special affinity w/the burgh connection but my college friends, from all over the country, know them!!! Mr. Music, you're so disappointing me w/the dis. Love the flashback though :)

Okay, so I am somewhere in the middle. I have heard of Rusted Root, and remember they had a following in college; but never superstar status. I did go to the youtube link and completely remember that song and I used to love it. I think I just never put the two together (maybe because I can't really understand what the singer says in the song; now that I know it's easy to recognize, but before not so much).
That song was on pretty much every warm up tape (yes, I said tape) before every volleyball match in Conference USA when I was in college. That covers Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
You are not crazy- at least about this :)
Never heard of them either! I would have been in MN for those years. The video *sounds familiar at first but then it doesn't. Plus the singer looks way too much like my ex-husband ;( blech
I only heard "Send Me On My Way" because -- it was on the "Party of Five" Soundtrack.
Go ahead -- laugh.
Hi! I just found your blog through a link from Quigs's blog and have been reading through your posts.
I LOVE Rusted Root, too. They were uber huge back in college (in Virginia), and I sometimes pop When I Woke in the cd player for my kids to listen to. Ah, the memories... :)
